Maybe you want the sound of water moving across the yard. Maybe you just want the look of a creek without any water at all. We build both. A stream that flows and a dry creek bed are two different jobs, and each needs a plan. In Orangevale, we build them for homes with our heat and clay soil in mind.
When You Need Backyard Streams and Creek Beds
A recirculating stream makes sense when you want moving water and sound. Water starts at a high spot, runs down a lined channel, and returns to the top with a pump. A dry creek bed makes sense when you want the look of a creek with no water to run. It is a winding path of river rock, boulders, and plants.
Problems start when the channel is not lined well or the stones are set loose. A stream loses water out the sides. Rocks wash out of place. A dry creek bed looks like a pile of gravel instead of a creek. In Orangevale, our clay-loam soil swells and shrinks, and 100-degree days pull water out of shallow streams. A plan built for those facts keeps the look right.
Our Backyard Streams and Creek Beds Process
First, we walk your yard with you. We look at the slope, the sun, and the path a stream or creek bed should take. For a stream, we find where power can reach.
For a recirculating stream, we dig and shape the channel, then line it so water stays in. We set stones along the edges and in the bed to make riffles and small drops. A pump at the low end sends the water back to the top. For a dry creek bed, we shape a winding swale and set boulders and river rock so it looks natural. We add plants along the banks so both fit the yard.
Our streams and creek beds are built in your own yard, not in a real creek. If your property touches a real creek, we talk about permits before we make any plan. The Sacramento creek protection guidance says not to place things that block a floodway, to keep the plants along a stream, and that permits may be needed for work in a real streambed.
Last, we fill the stream, start the pump, and walk its length with you. We adjust stones so the water sounds right and stays in the channel. For a dry creek bed, we walk it with you and tune the rock and plants until it looks like it has always been there. You see the finished work before we leave.
Backyard Streams and Creek Beds Cost in Orangevale
Cost depends on the length and type of the feature. A short dry creek bed is a simpler build than a long stream with a pump. The slope of your yard, how far power has to run, and the size of the stones you choose also matter. We give you a clear, written quote before any work begins. You know what you are getting before we break ground.
