Backflow Testing in Orangevale, CA

Keep Yard Water Out of Your Drinking Water

An installed backflow assembly still needs a test. Know who to call, when it is due, and how to make sure the county gets your results.

Do Orangevale Backflow Assemblies Need Annual Testing?

Possibly. Sacramento County requires backflow assemblies at a facility's water service connection to be tested when first installed and at least once a year. The county may require tests more often in some cases. The county's program page does not say whether this covers a home irrigation assembly, so ask the county or your water agency whether yours is covered.

The reason is simple: protect drinking water. If supply pressure drops, water can flow backward from yard pipes toward the clean water supply. A backflow assembly helps stop that flow. Testing checks that its parts still work, rather than assuming they do because the sprinklers turn on.

What a Backflow Assembly Does

Think of the assembly as a guard between your drinking water and your irrigation pipes. It is a set of parts built to stop water from moving the wrong way. Yard water is not drinking water. Once water enters the irrigation side, it can come into contact with soil and other things you would not want in a glass.

The assembly and the test have different jobs. The assembly provides protection. The test checks that protection. A new controller, clean sprinkler heads, or a green lawn does not prove the assembly passes. You need a test result for that, not a quick look at how well the lawn is growing.

The Sacramento County Testing Rule

Sacramento County's cross connection control program explains the first test and the annual test rule. The Environmental Management Department, or EMD, runs the program. Its cited legal basis is Title 17 CCR Section 7605 and Sacramento County Code Section 6.30.110. Ask EMD about your own assembly if you are unsure which schedule applies.

Use an EMD-registered tester from the Certified Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester list. Do not assume that anyone who works on sprinklers can sign off on the test. Before you book, confirm that the tester is registered with EMD. Tell them where the assembly is and share any county notice or past test report you have.

Who Books the Test in Orangevale?

The property owner is responsible for arranging the test. Do not wait for the water company to book it for you. Keep the last test date where you can find it. Set a reminder before the next annual test is due. If EMD has told you to test more often, use that schedule instead. If EMD sends you an annual testing reminder letter, contact a registered tester and have every assembly listed on the notice tested.

  1. Find your last report and any notice from EMD.
  2. Choose a tester from EMD's registered tester list.
  3. Book the test and make sure the tester can reach the assembly.
  4. Ask for the result and keep a copy with your property records.
  5. Confirm that EMD receives the report within 20 days of the test.

If you have just bought the home, ask for the prior report. An assembly sitting beside the house does not tell you when it was last tested. Start with the records, then ask EMD or a registered tester what needs to happen next.

A Blue Tag Is Not the Whole Paper Trail

A passing test gets a blue test tag. The tester sends the results to EMD electronically. The property owner is still responsible for making sure EMD gets that report within 20 days of the test. A tag and a submitted report are two parts of the same task. Do not stop at the tag and forget the report.

Ask the tester how you can confirm the report was sent. Keep the test date, result, and tester's details together. If you cannot confirm receipt, follow up while you are still within the 20-day window. Clear records help you avoid guessing when the next test comes around. Ask the tester for a copy of the electronic test report, since it shows the date EMD received your results.

If an Orangevale Test Is Skipped or Fails

A skipped test leaves you without a current check that the assembly works. It also leaves the county testing requirement unmet. Do not treat the lack of a visible leak as a passing result. Contact a registered tester and EMD about the missed test rather than waiting for another year.

A failed assembly must be repaired or replaced and retested before it is back in service. A repair alone does not finish the job. The retest must show that the assembly passes. Ask who will handle each step so the repair, retest, and report do not fall between different people.

Why Orangevale Soil and Older Pipes Matter

Orangevale's clay-loam soil takes in water slowly. Water can pool when sprinklers put it down faster than the ground can absorb it. That makes the line between yard water and drinking water worth keeping clear. Clay does not set the test schedule, though. The county rule does.

Older piping can also make it harder to trace a system's layout and past changes. Age alone does not prove an assembly has failed. Have the setup checked rather than guessing from its age. For runoff, use our cycle and soak watering guide. Short watering cycles address soil absorption, but they do not replace a backflow test.

Plan Upgrades Without Losing Track of Testing

McGuire installs backflow prevention setups as part of its irrigation work. This guide explains the testing rule, not the steps for installing an assembly. Keep the two tasks separate when you plan a project. Ask about the assembly, the first test, and who will confirm that the report reaches EMD.

If you are also changing controls or watering zones, our guide to irrigation rebates in Orangevale explains why you should check with your water agency, not assume SMUD offers a rebate. An upgrade or a rebate does not cancel the testing rule. For help planning the whole yard system, talk to McGuire about irrigation and sprinkler systems in Orangevale.
